Hello and welcome to another episode and today we are talking about the hot topic of 2017 ie. SSL certificates.
The year 2017 has been all about HTTPS and SSL. As you may be aware that Google announced that SSL will be a mandatory thing for websites or blog.
if you don't have an SSL certificate installed on your website they will show a notification to the visitors saying that the website is not secure.
Which I am sure you don't want.
Why as a website owner you should care about SSL certificate.
Firstly, and this is the most important part.
As a website owner, it is your responsibility to make sure all user data is safely going from your website to the server and vice versa.
Now, If you are accepting payments via card on your website then you must have SSL installed on your website to safely capture the card details.
Even the payment gateways that you purchase to accept payments on your websites will not approve your website if you don’t have SSL installed.
Now if you don’t have an e-commerce website or not accepting cards for any kind of payments on your website, do you still need SSL?
The answer is yes.
If your website has a login form or even a comment form you need to get SSL certificate as per the Google announcement.
And if you look closely its completely makes sense.
If your website has login form then people will use their email id as username and for the password, they will use a something which might be common or similar to our websites that they might be using.
This is very normal behavior. People tend to use common or similar passwords on various websites so that they don’t have to remember all those different passwords.
Now if you don’t have SSL certificate installed on your website, this login information will be sent to the server without any encryption and there is a very high chance of getting misused.
Same goes for the comment and contact forms on your website.
Basically, Google wants to make sure all data transfer from and to your website should be secured and encrypted.
How this is an opportunity for your website.
Adding SSL certificate is not only about getting that ‘Secure’ tag on your website URL but its also a great opportunity for your website SEO as well if done correctly.
Here is how.
Once you get the SSL certificate installed this will encourage the google bots to crawl the website all over again.
As Google will be giving a little priority to HTTPS links or the websites with SSL certificates. So it could be a great opportunity for you to get your website re-indexed in google again and you may get better rankings.
So get your website audited by your SEO team and do the recommended changes and then install the SSL certificate so that you can get the most out of the Google re-indexing of your new URLs.
So, that’s all for this episode. I see you in the next one, very soon.
